Report from the WAVE drive

This is what the Whiskey cars looked like before they hit the iceberg!

WAVE…Whidbey Annual Volvo Event. Volvos from all over the state invade Whidbey Island for a full day of driving and activities. The folks from the south grabbed an early ferry from Mukilteo to Clinton. The ferry never looked this good.

Whidbey have a very active and eclectic group of car folks and they call themselves the Whidbey Island Sports Car Club.  They have an informal meet at the Wifire Cafe in Freeland every first Saturday.

We started by crashing their meet with tons of Volvos. See that Porsche in the back?…pfffft…just background noise!

…and the lot kept filling up…

Swedish stuff everywhere!

We had a total of 30 cars and five of them were Duetts!

More Duetts coming…Eric Hedberg leading.

You have seen the Bergman movie where the actor is playing chess with Death himself. Here Joe is playing Matt for a 90,000 mile service. Pretty much the same thing!

This ridiculously nice restored 122 was present early in the day but left early so I did not get a chance to check in with the owner. All the body seams etc was absolutely correct. Rare to see.

Peter’s like new 122 sedan.

Mike Deskin’s Swedish Racing Green Volvo.
I am going out on a limb here but I am pretty sure this is a 1967 1800S.

Swedish Iron kept rolling in, like this very nice 122 sedan. Check the facial impression on the dude in the background: “Ohhh, I want one, my Chevy ain’t makin’ it!”

Early 1957 direct import car.

A few years in between them but they both serve the same purpose. Haul people and stuff!

After the locals had enough of the Swedish congregation, we headed out to tear up the roads of Whidbey Island.
Here Holly is multi tasking by taking a selfie while directing Walt how to lead the pack.

A lot of traffic on the island! Weather was overcast and very pleasant temperatures.

Volvos coming and going!

This guy is gaining on me…better throttle up!

Dammit! Can’t seem to shake this dude!

Mid day we stopped at Volvo Jim’s house for tube steaks and ground up cow meat. Peggy’s 1800ES up front.

Jim’s yard became a great back drop for shooting Volvos. This is Barry & Sheryl Mattausch nice restored 1967 Volvo 1800S.

Interesting detail on this car. This was a daily driver for many years and Barry got tired of cleaning out debris from the fuel filler cavity and it is also a very rust prone area. His solution: Move the filler cap to the side. Not even Volvo thought about this until the 1800E car was presented.

Like…Volvos everywhere!

Eric’s Jensen bumper and Crown Vic wheel equipped 1967 Volvo 1800S catching some shade under the trees.

Ted & Linda Pampeyan 1973 1800ES that they bought new with Dick’s car in the background.

After lunch we were back on the road to visit Malcolm and his vintage industrial machines and vintage car collection.

I call this one “Duett on the Road”

Some dude thinking he is the Saint riding my bumper. I better put it in overdrive!

Heather and Darin taking a high speed turn while Darin offering peace to the world.

At Malcolm’s place. The Volvos in good company with Malcolm’s Model A truck.

Birds of a feather…buncha Amazon dudes thinking they are special!

Mitch and Jessica Layton code 46 red 1967 122S coupe. I wish I could own such a car!

Some of the industrial machines in Malcolm’s collection. He fired both up and it’s music to any gearhead.

All original Model A sedan

Malcolm offered free rides in his 1910 Brush Runabout.
One-hundred-and-eleven years! old car, still runs great. Wood front axle and frame!

Heading out for the last leg of the trip…home! Ingvar in the white PV and David Smith in his 1967 1800S is trying to cut him off.

Sometime in the very near future when computer chips have completely run out the roads and gas stations will look like this:
Nothing but analog Volvos left on the road.

Special thanks to Rich Anderson, Malcolm Bishop and Jim MacIndoe (a.k.a. Volvo-Jim for making this happen.

Great Day, we will do it again next year!
